Posted 7:11 AM 1/31/2013 : Protecting seniors with the Shingles vaccine

An important reminder for anyone over the age of 60 to get the shingles vaccine. A recent report by the CDC says it's usually one of the forgotten vaccines, but getting it could save you from a life-time of pain.

News 5 sat down with Dr. Laura Ziegler from Memorial Hospital's Senior Clinic. She says anyone who's had chicken pox is at high risk. The virus stays dormant in the cells of the nervous system-- only to emerge as shingles decades later.

Almost one in three people in the U.S. will develop shingles, and if not treated immediately- can lead to serious medical problems.

The shot runs around $200 and is covered by Medicare Part D. Memorial does not currently offer the Shingles vaccine, but it can be found at your local pharmacy.
