Veterans from the Greenhorn Valley area have a new monument to their service.
Several people came from Colorado City and Rye for the unveiling of a new memorial at the Colorado City Cemetery Saturday. It's a monument honoring veterans from each branch of service; something they've wanted to build for a while. The local Veterans of Foreign Wars post, 7305, has worked for four years trying to gather the money needed to have the memorial made, and set.
"There's a lot of veterans down here that a lot of people don't know about, and a lot of the guys - older veterans - like to hide down here in the hills; so we decided to start putting together the monument here.," says Garry Melchi, VFW post 7305 commander. "We owed all the veterans in this valley something special."
It's not only meant to be a tribute to the veterans, but also to those serving right now and those who will serve in the future.
The words in engraved in the monument are a quote from former Post Commander Rodney Smith, reading: "Let us never forget those that give to their fellow man the opportunity to live free."
Melchi says it was a lot of personal donations from the area that got the project done.
