Winter weather can be unpleasant, but it can also be unhealthy with those bone chilling temperatures.
When it's cold outside your heart must work extra hard, putting stress on the cardiovascular system of even healthy people. Heart doctor, Daniel Ddmundowicz says blood pressure goes up and blood vessels narrow.
"It's not a good thing -we know that blood vessels have a layer of muscle around them that can spasm that muscle and contract especially under the stress of hitting very cold weather."
People with asthma and other respiratory disease can also suffer when temperatures tumble.
"You can get what we call bronco-spasm when you inhale the cold air that's rapid narrowing of the airway passages."
Very cold temperatures can also have a negative effect on your body's response to exercise
"For instance breathing in the cold air during a jog can cause undo stress so we should be wearing something over our mouth to warm the air we breath in."
And when it comes to shoveling snow, the doctor says you can still do it, even with known heart disease if it's under control, but don't over do it.
"Maybe you do a little bit of shoveling, you don't pick up wet snow you push it off to the side you take a break every once in a while just be smart about the way you are exerting yourself."
