Posted 7:25 AM 10/10/2012 : Living in Colorado could hurt your vision
It's uncomfortable, it's painful and if left untreated, it could lead to very serious problems for your eyes.
As it turns out, living in Colorado doesn't help. Dr. Charles McMahon, with Eye Specialists of Colorado, says the air is so dry in the state, our tears are evaporating into the atmosphere instantly. As a result, thousands of people are suffering from dry eye.
Even though it can happen for a number of reasons, Dr. MacMahon says the dry climate and high altitude of Colorado only makes things worse.
He says oxygen coming through tears is critical for the health of the eye. If you don't get if from tears, the body will fight back and blood shot eyes are a result.
As we get deeper into fall, Dr. McMahon says he expects to see more patients come through his doors with severe dry eyes.
"The winters in Colorado, we can get down to 12% humidity and patients with dry eye syndrome, who are boderline during the summer, are miserable during the winter. They come out of the woodwork during the winter looking for relief."
