Posted 6:43 PM 12/11/2012 : Colorado mountains simulate Afghanistan for helicopter crews
Southern Colorado is again hosting helicopter training to simulate conditions like soldiers find in Afghanistan. Pilots and crews from Fort Riley Kansas are at Fort Carson for several weeks to test and improve their helicopter skills at high altitude.
"At higher altitude rotor wing aircraft are more limited on power and the weight you can have. So we come up here to be more precise in our flying abilities," said Chief Warrant Officer, Dwayne Williams. They study the science of high altitude mountain flying, but crews also say there is nothing like experiencing what it feels like flying in thin air over mountain terrain.
