Posted 11:16 PM 10/5/2012 : Storm prep: the frenzy before the freeze
As the first hard freeze of the year draws closer, folks across southern Colorado are preparing for the big chill.
Wintry weather's just around the corner and history shows we're right on schedule; the first freeze usually hits Colorado Springs around October 1st, and Pueblo just a week later. This year mother nature is falling in line, serving up a snowy Saturday for Springs.
For those out in the cold, the Salvation Army at 709 South Sierra Madre in Colorado Springs has opened its warming shelter.
For others, preparations are a bit more cozy. "I'm gonna go home, climb in the bed, pull the covers up to right here and peek my head out to watch the TV," David Long, a Springs resident, told News 5. Kerin Necker said of her prep plan: "Sweaters. Sweaters and blankets."
The Department of Transportation has already taken to local roadways to prep for the overnight storm. Crews will be watching the weather through the wee hours, sanding and salting where necessary.
