COLORADO SPRINGS- District 11 is one step closer to casting a vote on whether to close six schools affected by budget cuts and declining enrollment.
Thursday evening, the district heard from parents and students on both sides of the table.
"We've got a lot of people who are concerned about their neighborhoods and schools," D-11 spokesperson Devra Ashby said.
The district says closing and consolidating schools is one option they are looking at to balance their budget.
"The state has cut our funding by 16-percent," Gleen Gustafson, D-11's chief financial officer said. "Our enrollment is down by 14-percent and the combination of those two has caused us to cut $40 million out of our budget over the last 7 years."
The following schools are being carefully looked at:
Wasson High School
Mann Middle School
Bates Elementary School
Lincoln Elementary School
Edison Elementary School
Midland Elementary School
"We are getting feedback on these considerations and asking for the public's ideas," Ashby said.
3 more public hearings will be held before a vote is cast.
Meetings will be held on Dec. 17th, 18th, and 19th.
A final decision is expected to be reach early next year.
