Posted 5:52 PM 12/27/2011 : Pools were too costly to keep open
Time is running out to make a splash in the pool at the Colorado Springs Recreation Center in Memorial Park. The center is among three city owned pools that will be closing at the end of the week.
Kevin and Tina Dessart own Swim Colorado Inc. which took over management of the recreation center, the Wilson Ranch Pool and the Portal Pool in 2010. On Saturday they posted notices on the rec center door and emailed their members telling them the city cancelled their contract.
Tina declined an on camera interview Tuesday and Kevin couldn't be reached by phone. Parks Administration Manager Kim King said the Dessarts told them the pools were just to expensive to keep open.
"So, we will take them back over and then look for other opportunities in 2012 to reopen as many of the pools as we can," King said.
The trouble is, City Council and Mayor Bach didn't allocate any money to manage the other pools in the 2012 budget. If they had, King says it would have cost, "probably a million dollars or close to it."
The only public pool currently open in Colorado Springs is at the Cottonwood Creek Recreation Center. King says even Cottonwood will be temporarily closed from January 4-14 for mandatory maintenance.
In the meantime, she is hoping to develop some type of public/private partnership or sponsorship arrangement to reopen the other pools. The city will take first steps of that process early in the new year.
