Posted 5:41 PM 11/19/2011 : Racing to earn bikes for kids
It's a race to help those less fortunate. Bikers of all ages and skill levels came out to participate in the 2011 Pikes Peak SuperCross Bike Race. They're mission is to raise money to provide new bikes for kids.
"(It's) just to encourage kids who might not of otherwise been able to afford a new bike", said Bob Stellick.
The SuperCross is not your typical race. It's a mix between road biking, mountain biking, and running. Participants ride their bikes for a short distance and then run up a hill. Once they get to the top they continue through a wild course. The race takes about 45 minutes to complete.
"We live in an area that has world class racers in it. So we're very fortunate to have that. So some of these kids out here are very world class", said Bob Stellick.
Kids on Bikes is working with the organization and with various schools to help set educational goals for kids. If a child meets their goals at the end of the school year they get a new bike.
"It's encouraging them to really work hard at school and to earn a bike", said Bob Stellick.
Many participants say it feels great to be a part of a race that's helping others. They're hoping their hard work will help kids pedal their way into a bright future
