New requests for unemployment benefits fell sharply last week after rising in the past three weeks. Still, claims remain much higher than they would be in a healthy economy. The number of newly laid-off workers requesting jobless benefits fell slightly last week for the third straight week. But initial claims remain above levels that would signal net job gains.
