Roller coaster derails in Florida

Posted: Updated:

A fun night at an amusement park quickly turned into a nightmare for some.

Friday morning, investigators in Florida are trying to figure out how a roller coaster ride went horribly wrong after it derailed and flew off the track. The accident happened at the Mardi Gras Fun Center in Daytona Beach, on a ride called The Sandblaster.

Images show that the first car of the ride flew off the track and was left dangling.

Several riders in the car reportedly fell more than 30 feet to the ground. Another rider was left dangling from a car.

Firefighters worked for an hour to help stranded passengers down through the use of a tower truck. In total, six people had to be taken to the hospital.

The company that runs the coaster has yet to make a comment on the incident. An internet data base that tracks roller coasters reportedly had the ride listed as 35-years-old when it opened at the Daytona Beach location back in 2013.
