Buffalo Mountain Fire forces evacuations near Silverthorne

Posted: Updated:

Around 11 a.m Tuesday morning, Summit County Fire & EMS reported a wildfire burning on Buffalo Mountain.

At about noon, the fire was reported at 91 acres, as firefighters said there was rapid growth.

Summit Fire and U.S. Forest Service crews are responding to the fire. They have requested hand crews and a "big air attack," saying they hope to keep the fire from jumping the well-established fire break around Mesa Cortina and Wildernest.

Approximately 50 firefighters are currently on the ground, with 100 inbound.

The City of Pueblo also said it will be deploying a Type 1 fire apparatus to assist with fire, including four personnel Tuesday evening.

Multiple neighborhoods have been evacuated, including Wildernest and Mesa Cortina, above 20 Grand Road. People living below 20 Grand Road are on pre-evacuation notice. All are advised to get packed and ready to go immediately if and when an order comes down.

An evacuation center is set up at Silverthorne Recreation Center at 430 Rainbow Drive. Plans to use Silverthorne Elementary were canceled.

As of 2:45 p.m., Summit Fire & EMS reports 1,384 homes have evacuated while another 1,160 are on pre-evacuation notice. So far no buildings have been lost to the fire.

A fire hotline is in effect at 970-668-9730.

A couple of DC-10 tankers topped off their fuel tanks and tanks of fire retardant at the Colorado Springs Airport as they head out to fight the Buffalo Mountain Fire (near Silverthorne and the Badger Creek Fire (near the Colorado-Wyoming state lines).

Summit Fire said the fuel breaks that already existed are the reason the fire has not spread into the subdivision.
