Colorado Springs makes top of list for Memorial Day DUI arrests

Posted: Updated:
COLORADO SPRINGS -

As they do for many holiday weekends, law enforcement agencies implemented their 'The Heat Is On' DUI enforcement campaign for the recent Memorial Day weekend.

The Colorado Department of Transportation, Colorado State Patrol, and 102 other law enforcement agencies around the state teamed up for increased DUI enforcement from May 25th to May 29th.

During the enforcement period, 300 impaired drivers were arrested. On a positive note, this number is down from 332 over the same period in 2017.

Among the 102 participating agencies, the Colorado Springs Police Department came in at number one with 25 arrests. Denver was second with 22, followed by Aurora with 17.

“The number of impaired drivers arrested over Memorial Day weekend is an ongoing reminder of the risk impaired drivers impose to our state,” said Col. Matthew Packard, Chief of the CSP. “The Heat Is On enforcement periods help stop impaired drivers from putting both themselves and others in danger, and potentially save lives.”

According to CDOT, an average of 77 impaired drivers are arrested everyday in Colorado. The Colorado blood-alcohol limit for a Driving Under the Influence (DUI) charge is 0.08 percent or higher, and for a Driving While Ability Impaired (DWAI) charge, it is 0.05 percent or higher. First-time DUI offenders can be punished with up to one year in jail, license suspension and thousands of dollars in fines.

The Heat Is On campaign will return June 15th, for what CDOT called the Summer Blitz enforcement period.
