Posted: Updated:
COLORADO SPRINGS -

More than $7 million has been awarded to the Colorado Springs Airport this week.

The $7.3 million in funding was awarded by the U.S. Department of Transportation that will help to expand and improve the airport's taxiway, according to a release. Congressman Doug Lamborn helped secure the grant over the past few months to improve and upgrade the local airport.

An agreement, facilitated by Lamborn, was also made between Fort Carson, the U.S. Forest Service, and the Colorado Springs Airport to house a large aircraft fire retardant filling tank. According to a release, the tank will assist in providing another wildfire-fighting resource for the current and upcoming fire seasons.

The House also passed legislation to qualify the COS Airport for federal grants that cover marketing costs by appealing to more travelers, carriers, and new flight routes.

"I'm so pleased to see over $7 million secured for the Colorado Springs Airport. This is a great opportunity for our community as it improves the capabilities of our region's travel services. I will keep striving towards making our airport the best it can be and bringing more economic growth to our region."
