Cheyenne Mountain Zoo welcomes giraffe number 200!

Posted: Updated:
COLORADO SPRINGS -

After much anticipation, The Cheyenne Mountain Zoo welcomed giraffe number 200 Monday night!

Twenty-year-old giraffe Muziki gave birth to the newest member of the zoo's herd a little before 8:30 p.m. Monday.

Zookeepers kept a close eye on the birth, and continue to monitor the baby's first moments.

The new baby is trying to stand up on his or her own, which can happen as soon as 30 minutes after birth.

Muziki's expected due date was in late May or early April, but the zoo said everything was fine with the pregnancy despite the little one being weeks overdue.

The zoo has not yet said whether the calf a male or a female. There are no names ready for the newest addition to the zoo either, the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo is allowing people to suggest a pair of names for $5 each to benefit the giraffe herd. Five final names will be chosen for a public vote soon.

Fellow mom-to-be 10-year-old Laikipia was also due around the same time, but the wait continues for giraffe number 201.
