Your Healthy Family: Many people I spoke with didn't know the signs of a stroke

COLORADO SPRINGS -

May is National Stroke Awareness Month, and as I have talked about in previous stroke stories, calling 9-1-1 and getting treated quickly are the biggest keys when it comes to surviving or recovering from a stroke.

Here in southern Colorado, we are fortunate to have a hospital that is a Comprehensive Stroke Center.  UCHealth Memorial Hospital Central in Colorado Springs has the expertise to treat the most complex strokes, but for the public, what’s most important is knowing the symptoms of a stroke, and exactly what to do about them.

I decided to hit the streets to see who how many people know the signs of a stroke, F.A.S.T.

F - Facial drooping

A - Arm weakness

S - Slurred speech

T - Time to call 9-1-1

Almost everyone I asked was unsure of common stroke symptoms and had to think about it.  Many people quickly answered they didn’t know any symptoms.

Others who said they did know stroke symptoms gave me the signs of a heart attack, which is a common mistake.  However, many of those same people did know a couple of the key indicators of a stroke and what to do.

In April, UCHealth Memorial polled 200 people who live in El Paso County on their knowledge of the signs of a stroke.  I will share the results of that survey in our next story that shows how much work needs to be done to educate the general public about the signs of a stroke.
