Celebration of life for Sand Creek student Tyrese Gayle

Posted: Updated:

Loved ones gathered Wednesday night to remember a Colorado Springs teenager who was shot and killed in March.

Friends and family of 17-year-old Tyrese Gayle held a celebration of his life and a balloon release to honor his memory.

On March 16th, Tyrese was at a friend's house near Airport and Murray when he was shot and killed. News 5 spoke with his mother in the days after his death. She told us she got a phone call around 1 a.m. saying her son had shot himself, but she never believed that.

The event honoring his life was not about the investigation, but instead about showing love for the lost.
"This is a celebration of his life. I want to keep celebrating him for a year until his death date next year. This is what Tyrese would have wanted," said his mother Mia Gayle.

Springs Police said this week the investigation into Tyrese's death is ongoing, but won't comment any further.
