Crosses for Losses opens pantry in Penrose, asking for donations

PENROSE -

It's been almost five years since the Black Forest Fire devastated communities across El Paso County and since the non-profit organization Crosses for Losses assisted fire victims.
Now, the same organization is finding a way to help out the people of Penrose.

"You get to meet the people in the community, you realize how bad some of them are struggling and how they need that assistance," said Crosses for Losses founder Amanda Davis.

Even though she took some time to herself, she couldn't ignore the need around her.

"I don't think we ever thought we were going to go back to a full-time food pantry," said Davis.

"But when you get that God-call, that's really what you do."

The organization officially opened a pantry this week with essential items for people in Penrose struggling to make ends meet.

At the pantry, you'll find everything from food items to hygiene items.

"There is no regular-based food pantry or resources here for things like that which makes it hard for this community which has some financial growing pains," added Davis.

The pantry runs thanks to the help of volunteers, who organize and sift through the donations.

"I help when I can and so it's a little something that she doesn't have to do by herself," said volunteer Samantha McEntyre.

Davis says she hopes to add fruits and vegetables to her selection down the line, but for now she's making the most of what she has and she's grateful for her volunteers.

"One of the most amazing things that you'll ever see is when a community decides to come together for a greater good."

Davis says the pantry could use monetary donations to help cover utility bills and other necessary costs.
