Boulder officially bans assault weapons, bump stocks, large magazines

Posted: Updated:
BOULDER -

The Boulder City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to ban the sale and possession of assault weapons, bump stocks and high-capacity magazines within city limits.

City councilors in Boulder gave final approval to the ban Tuesday night. This was the third time the issued was voted on in the council.

The new ordinance defines "assault weapons" as semi-automatic firearms designed with military features to allow rapid spray firing for the quick and efficient killing of humans.

People who already own assault weapons will be able to keep them but must get a certificate proving prior ownership. The other options for those owning a qualifying weapon are to dispose of the weapon, turn it into authorities, or break the gun so it doesn't work.

The permit will only be granted to those who pass a background check, aren't prohibited from owning a gun, can safely store the gun, would only have the gun on their property, and would immediately report the loss or theft of the gun.

A group who opposes the ordinance marched in Boulder last week ahead of the second city council vote on the issue. The group openly carried long guns as they marched.

During a public comment period before the vote, attorneys for the Mountain States Legal Foundation told councilors they would challenge the ban in court.
