Richelle Gittens wins May Teachers First Award

Posted: Updated:
COLORADO SPRINGS -

News 5 is proud to present our May Teachers First Award to Richelle Gittens at Queen Palmer Elementary School in District 11.

She's been teaching for 19 years in Colorado Springs and was nominated by one of her peers for going above and beyond to take care of her fourth grade students.

"You get to put into their future, and so that's what I love," Gittens said. "I get to see the changes everyday and they're great."

Her Principal says she is also known for bringing new learning opportunties and experiences to her students, like a field trip to Bent's Old Fort National Historic Site last week.

"She goes outside of whatever a normal school day would be and she makes sure students are fed, that they have shelter, she's taken in foster students in her own home before so that they could finish school at our school," Julie Fahey, Principal at Queen Palmer Elementary School said.

"She's one of the best teachers I've ever had since Kindergarten and I could ever ask for," Marcus Hughes, a fourth grade student said.
