Detectives investigate shooting where man was hit by stray round

Posted: Updated:

Teller County Sheriff's Detectives are investigating a shooting where a man was struck by gunfire Saturday afternoon.

The shooting happened around 2:49 p.m. on Forest Service Road 379, half a mile off Gold Camp Road. Deputies said 52-year old Michael D. Fletcher of Colorado Springs, and his adult daughter were collecting brass from spent shell casings when shots rang out from an unknown location.

Fletcher and his daughter took cover behind their car when he was struck in the shoulder by a stray round, deputies said. He was transported to Penrose Main Hospital where he underwent surgery and is expected to recover.

While the investigation is ongoing, detectives believe that an individual or group of illegal shooters in the area may be responsible for unintentionally shooting in the direction of the victims.
