D60 strike hits possible turning point with new offer

Posted: Updated:

The D60 teacher's strike will make it to a 5th day, after PEA President Suzanne Ethredge says the district showed a "lack of urgency."

But a new offer on the table may mean the 5th day is also the last full day of this strike.

"I believe this third offer is a viable offer.  I hope we can get our kids back to the classroom which is the #1 goal," said Superintendent Charlotte Macaluso, who broke her silence to the media on Thursday.

Macaluso says she's been in contact with both associations each day of the strike.

But unlike the previous two offers, this one was not immediately rejected.

"It's definitely under consideration right now.  I would agree with that it's the furthest we've come, but we're still working some things out with it that we might need to deal with it still tomorrow," Ethredge explained.

The details of the offers are not being released yet, though Ethredge says no deal will be signed behind closed doors.

"We do believe that it needs to be bargained in public, as per Colorado law.  So we're in the process of trying to get some logistics arranged," she explained.

"Part of what we're doing is not only getting a public bargaining session scheduled, but trying to figure out--if we need to go forward, how would we do that?  How can we get this, end it, and ratify it as soon as we could?"

A public bargaining session, between D60 and the teacher's union, has been scheduled for 9 a.m. Saturday morning.

Teachers will meet at 10:30 Friday morning, to discuss the details of Saturday's meeting.

Ethredge says they'd like to move the bargaining session up a day, if possible, which they'll talk about on Friday.
