Mother, daughter thankful to Children's Hospital Colorado for life-changing surgery

Posted: Updated:

A mother and daughter share a strong bond over a debilitating disease: scoliosis.

But thanks to Children's Hospital Colorado, they're now looking forward to the future, using Mother's Day as an opportunity to recognize the folks who are helping make this holiday a joyous one.

Doctors diagnosed 16-year-old Brianna Binkley with scoliosis when she was eight years old.

"When you see your kids struggle and there's something wrong that you can't fix, that's probably the worst thing you can go through as a mom," said mom Nicole Binkley.

When a recent growth spurt worsened her spine curvature, she knew she had to take action.

"That's when I really understood 'ok we really need to be proactive," Nicole said.

In January, Brianna underwent spinal fusion at Children's Hospital Colorado.
surgeons used 17 screws to fuse two metal rods to her spine and straighten the curve.

"When I had surgery, I realized that it was just so very different and it was something that I am so grateful that I went through it," said Brianna.

Back then, Brianna had to go out of town for care.
But now, a new children's hospital is set to open in spring of 2019 in Colorado Springs.

"The new hospital will bring doctors and specialties to the area that are unlike what we currently have," said Amy Triandiflou with Children's Hospital Colorado Foundation.

The mother-daughter pair are excited for the new care that'll be available in their backyard.

"With my surgery, I went to an adult hospital, had an adult doctor and, you know, it's a different education to talk to kids than it is an adult," added Nicole.

Now-a-days, Brianna enjoys a normal teenage life.

She even got to enjoy her prom night, free of any pain.

"Standing for a long time was such an issue for me and that was just so hard for me just because I would get some serious back pain from it," said Brianna.

"And so being able to do that now is so incredible."

The new hospital will feature a pediatric-only emergency room and private surgery suites among other features.
