Fire burns estimated 15 acres north of Bailey

Posted: Updated:

The Park County Sheriff's Office lifted evacuation orders from a wildfire burning about 8 miles north of Bailey Thursday.

Mandatory evacuations were ordered for people living within a half mile radius of the fire Thursday afternoon, with a larger area on pre-evacuation notice.

At one time, Park County officials said it had burned an estimated 22 acres, but the U.S. Forest Service revised that estimation to 15 acres Thursday night. Firefighters remained on hand overnight to monitor the fire due to its proximity to homes.

Firefighters estimate containment at 15 percent.

The fire was first reported a little before 3 p.m. Thursday at the Harris Shooting Range. The cause of the fire has not yet been released.

The Forest Service and other surrounding agencies are on site and fighting the blaze from the air with helicopters and with air tankers. There is also a 20 person hand crew on the ground working to establish containment lines.
