Teen's death first considered suicide, now ruled a homicide

Posted: Updated:

The death of a 17-year-old found on Whileaway Circle in Colorado Springs on Wednesday was first investigated as a possible suicide, but has since been ruled as the 14th homicide in city limits.

According to police, the initial information they received before finding Marshall Aaron Mitschelen's body indicated he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. However, officers spoke to witnesses who said that was not the case, and a possible suspect had left the area before police arrived.

The coroner confirmed the case should be handled as a homicide on Thursday.

As you may recall, police had an active scene late Wednesday for a standoff with a possible barricaded suspect inside a home on Enchanted Circle. After several hours on scene, SWAT determined the suspect was not at the address.

The as yet unidentified 17-year-old suspect is wanted for felony manslaughter. His name is not being released because he is a juvenile under Colorado law.

Anyone with information about this case should contact CSPD at 719-444-7000  or contact Crime Stoppers at (719) 634-STOP.
