14-year-old victim speaks out, after teacher found guilty of sexual assault

EL PASO COUNTY -

It's been a full spectrum of emotions for the family of a 14-year-old girl... who was sexually assaulted by her teacher back in 2016.

"It makes me sick and angry," the victim's mother told News5 on Wednesday.

42-year-old Kenyada Lattimore was arrested in April of 2016, while working as a PE teacher at Ambassador Academy--after the victim's mother found explicit text messages between the two.

The investigation later revealed Lattimore had sexually assaulted the victim on several occasions.

"They took away her innocence--even though it wasn't all the way.  It still took away a piece of her and hurt her in a way it's going to take her years to recover," said the victim's mother.

They feared that recovery may never happen, though, after the jury read the first felony count--not guilty.

"I thought the rest of them were going to be 'not guilty' as well," the victim said, during an interview Wednesday.

Instead, the jury delivered a guilty verdict on the remaining three sex crime charges: two counts of sexual assault of a child by a person in a position of trust, and one count of internet sexual exploitation of a child.

Lattimore was immediately taken into custody.

His sentencing has been set for July 31st.

It's a moment his 14-year-old victim says other sexual assault victims, too scared to speak up, deserve to have.

"It's worth it," she said with tears in her eyes, "because the relief I feel right now is better than all the pain I felt these last two years."

She says her road to recovery can finally start.

"Healing.  And coming closer together through something that was horrible."

The identities of both people interviewed for this story are being withheld, to protect the family's privacy.
