Woman arrested for starting wildland fire at Hancock Expressway and S. Circle Drive

Posted: Updated:

A woman was arrested by Colorado Springs Police Wednesday night on charges she intentionally started a fire near Hancock Expressway and S. Circle Drive.

According to police, Nicole Green was seen wandering in the center median ditch just north of the burned field. Police say she admitted to starting the fire at several points, then resisted officers.  Green was arrested on charges of Obstruction and Firing Woods or Prairie, then released.

Firefighters are working to put out numerous small fires burning in heavy timber near the intersection of Hancock Expressway and S. Circle Drive Wednesday night.

First calls for the fires came in around 8 p.m.

Firefighters said they were working to put out five to seven small fires in the area.

Response from firefighters closed the intersection of Hancock and Circle to stage their response. As of 9 p.m. roads in the area are expected to be closed for several more hours while crews mop up hot spots.

The fires were small, but burning around heavy timber, making it difficult to find an adequate water supply to put it out.

No structures were threatened in the area, and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
