Pueblo D60 says it has submitted a third offer to end teacher strike

Posted: Updated:

Following an announcement from Pueblo D60 that it had a third offer to end the teacher's strike, The Pueblo Education Association said the district agreed to a bargaining session Saturday morning.

In her first statement to the media since the strike began, Macaluso spoke to News 5 at the end of the fourth day of the strike.

Macaluso wouldn't answer any questions and wouldn't reveal any details of this deal.

Both parties will meet at 10:30 a.m. Friday morning to discuss details about the planned bargaining meeting on Saturday.

The PEA also said earlier Thursday it will not have a decision Thursday night. They also would not release the details behind the deal.

The Pueblo Education Association said it still plans to rally and picket Friday along with other teachers from Pueblo County schools.

As News 5 has reported, they have been asking for a 2 percent cost of living adjustment this school year, not a stipend like the past two offers made by the district last week.

"I believe that this third offer is a viable offer, I hope that we can get our kids back to the classroom which is our number one goal," Macaluso said. "Most important, so important, we need our teachers in the classroom, we need our paraprofessionals back in the classroom and we're hoping we can bring resolution to the situation very soon."

On the flip side, the union says, progress-wise, this is the furthest they've come to possibly ending this strike but they say they legally can't accept this deal until a meeting has been open to the public.

Until that meeting happens, they say they cannot release the details behind this third offer.

On Friday, Minnequa Elementary School will reopen tomorrow with Haaff Elementary School.

Most other schools will remain closed for the fifth day on Friday.
