El Paso County Public Health rolls out new search feature for health violations

Posted: Updated:

Do you ever wonder if the restaurants where you eat are safe? A new feature on the county's website can help answer that question.

The El Paso County Department of Public Health launched an online search tool that rates local restaurants for food safety.

The search feature rates restaurants on a scale from unacceptable, marginal, fair, good and excellent. The classifications are based of the department of public health's risk index system.

Under that figure, the lower the number, means less risk of foodborne illness. The points are weighted based on violations that post a greater risk to customers of contracting illness. The labels are assigned accordingly:

  • Excellent – (0-19)
  • Good – (20-39)
  • Fair – (40-69)
  • Marginal – (70-99)
  • Unacceptable – (100 or greater)

Public Health inspects more than 2,600 licensed restaurants every year. The search tool allows you to search by restaurant name, address and rating.
