From the late 1800’s to current day, southern Colorado has been a prime destination for those seeking an active, outdoor lifestyle. The area supports a variety of climates, businesses and cultures. Communities are built along the edge of the Rockies, nestled into mountain valleys, and built proudly upon the majestic plains. KOAA-TV’s broadcast area is BIG; covering 30,000 square miles.
Since 1953, KOAA News5 has proudly served this diverse and culturally rich corner of Colorado and has become the #1 news and entertainment station in the designated market area. KOAA is also a leader in other media with the most daily traffic to its digital platforms: koaa.com, the First Alert5 weather app, and the KOAA News5 app.

In 1969, KOAA became the first station in the region to broadcast in color, and it expanded its operations into daily news coverage. In November 1977 KOAA was purchased by its current owner, Cordillera Communications (a subsidiary of Evening Post Industries). With the growth in El Paso County, KOAA set up a new facility near downtown Colorado Springs. Thanks to investments in technology and talented people, the station began its ascent to news dominance.
Late 60s Mid-90s Current
In 2014, the station purchased another facility in Northern El Paso County. KOAA5 is the only broadcast TV station that has 2 HD studios in both Colorado Springs (main set) and Pueblo. During this era of growth, KOAA5 established itself as a champion of the community by supporting local outreach organizations, digging into far-reaching investigations, and by providing vital information during emergency situations.
Over the years, KOAA5 has adopted a guardian brand; a culture of looking out for others in need and bringing light into dark places. This focus has developed into a newscast that is uniquely balanced between hard-hitting coverage and compelling storytelling. KOAA5 continues to be the dominant news provider in Southern Colorado and delivers critical information to its primary broadcast channel, all digital media platforms, a secondary 24/7 news and weather channel (5.2) called News5 Now, and a third channel (5.3) featuring the Grit network. Technology continues to evolve, but KOAA5 remains firm in its role as community champion. The station remains the first choice for viewers and users, no matter what the platform, and it will remain the station that is Always Watching Out For You.
