Pueblo teachers outline what they want approved

Posted: Updated:

Teachers in Pueblo's District 60 are still planning to strike on Monday, May 7 as negotiations with the School Board continue.

On Friday, the president of the Pueblo Education Association released a statement outlining what the teachers want approved.

"We are fed up with district leadership that consistently disrespects our educators and our community.  It is clear that adequately funding our schools is not a priority for them," said Mike Maes, a teacher of 25 years at East High School in the release.

Justina Carter, ESL teacher at Baca and Bradford elementary schools also commented in the release, "As educators, we know better than anyone what Pueblo's kids need and how decisions made by leadership have negatively impacted our students."

Here is the outline of what they are asking for:

  • Provide a 2% cost of living increase to all teachers for the current school year
  • Provide a 2.5% cost of living increase to all paraprofessionals for the current school year
  • Provide the step increase to paraprofessionals as outlined in their collective bargaining agreement
  • Provide the monthly $30 per person health insurance increase from January 1, 2018 to June 20, 2018
  • Educator and community voice is included in decision-making that impacts our classrooms and students

The organization said in the release that teachers, paraprofessionals and community members are welcome and planning to strike.
