Possible threat investigated at Pueblo West school

Posted: Updated:

Liberty Point International middle school in Pueblo West is on modified lockdown status Thursday for a potential threat to the school.

Pueblo County deputies are at the school investigating. The threat was found after first period in the form of a note. District 70 Superintendent Ed Smith said the 6th grade girls PE class found the note in the locker room, warning of a shooting at 10:30 a.m.

The school immediately contacted the sheriff's office and sent a message to parents. In that message, parents were told students would be released to parents if they felt they needed to pick them up. Smith said the district takes every threat seriously and that student safety is the most important thing. The school will remain on lockdown for the remainder of the day.

The sheriff's office said deputies will remain on scene throughout the day while they continue to investigate the source of the threat. It has not been determined if the threat is credible.

Anyone with information is asked to call the sheriff's office at 583-6250 or Crime Stoppers at 542-STOP.

Concerned parents can still pick up their children as long as they arrive at the front office and show proper identification, which includes a drivers license.

As of 11:30 a.m. a large number of students had been picked up for the day.
