El Paso & Teller County residents urged to register for emergency alerts

Posted: Updated:
SOUTHERN COLORADO -

With the possibility of a very active fire season in Colorado, officials are urging residents who live in El Paso and Teller Counties to register for the Emergency Notification System to receive alerts about emergencies in their area.

The Emergency Notification system is used by public safety officials to notify the public of emergencies that may pose a threat to their safety or property.

You can receive emergency alerts in a number of ways. By visiting www.elpasoteller911.org you can register for alerts via phone call, text message, or email. Residents without internet access can call (719) 785-1971 and choose how they would like to receive alerts. Those who register can receive alerts for up to five locations, based on the addresses you register.

In addition to registering for physical locations, residents can also download the Everbridge App. This app allows you to receive alerts on your mobile device while on the go. If you have the app and travel into a "incident zone," you will receive a push alert notification as well as a map of the area that was notified.

According to officials, the Emergency Notification System has been used an average of 65 times per year, which includes follow up "all clear" messages. In the last 45 days, the system has been used 27 times to alert people for five different fire, missing persons, and police activity.

The Emergency Notification System is a separate system from the one that sends amber alerts and severe weather alerts.

Registering for the system, as well as downloading the Everbridge App is free.
