COLORADO SPRINGS -

This week, the state of Colorado designated UCHealth Memorial Central in Colorado Springs as a Level I Trauma Center.  This new designation makes Memorial one of just four designated Level I centers in Colorado and the first in southern Colorado.

Dr. David Steinbruner is the Chief of Staff at UCHealth Memorial, and he explains what the new designation means for our region and the team effort involved in making it happen.

“We have given the people …. of Colorado Springs the ability to stay in this community, who otherwise would have been sent north to Denver.  It all begins with the trauma patient, and our EMS partners who we interact with and have trained to be part of our team. That process continues through the emergency department, up through the floors, up to rehab, to the chaplains, even to the people who restock the rooms.”

In the coming weeks, we’ll bring you in-depth stories about southern Colorado trauma patients, their treatment and recovery.  We’ll talk with their doctors and other medical professionals involved in trauma care.

London Lyle was nearly killed in a car crash on her way to Cheyenne Mountain High School.  “I was ejected from the vehicle and it landed on top of me. The next thing I remember is waking up here at Memorial.”

Mike Hite is an avid mountain biker who broke his neck and was treated at Memorial Central.  “My bike stopped in a vertical position, and I went straight down on my head.”

Matthew Bergland is a flight paramedic who often responds to trauma calls.  “A lot of what we do is the worst of the worst, and there are those that stand out where I really do feel like I made a difference."

We will have those stories in the coming weeks, in Your Healthy Family.
