Assistance program in Pueblo helps homeless vets find housing

Posted: Updated:
COLORADO -

The Volunteers of America opened a new office in Pueblo three months ago and they're inviting veterans to reach out and take advantage of the housing resources they can offer.

Their goal is simple: get homeless vets back on their feet.

"When I moved down here, I had nowhere to go," said army veteran John Mascarenas.

His future was uncertain, until he met Andrea Jagels at a Veterans Resource Center.

"She said she's gonna be there to help me find a place," Mascarenas said.

Thanks to her help, he found a place to call home - just in time for the holidays.

"To knowing that I might've been on the streets, moving in here, right around Christmastime, I couldn't ask for anything more," Mascarenas said.

The organization has helped 15 veterans find afforable housing so far, providing them with rent payments and security deposits.

But they're aiming to serve about 105 veterans before the end of the year.

"[We're] trying to find those veterans so we can invite them to come and see us so we can help out with their circumstance," said program manager Mike DeSalvo at Volunteers of America: Southern Colorado.

After taking Mascarenas' case, Jagels has continued to watch out for him - even helping secure household items like pots and pans.

"I just look forward to continuing to work with John until the point that we can graduate him because he has reached that point of self-sufficiency," Jagels said.

It's a journey they'll continue to work through together.

"Andrea's a godsend for me," Mascarenas said.
"She's helped me all the way through this."

The rapid re-housing program is made possible by a $1.5 million grant from the VA.
The Volunteers of America said they could use donations in the form of hygiene items (like toothbrushes, soap, etc.) to provide the vets they're assisting.

If you'd like to drop off donations, you can do so at their office address, listed below.
