CSFD says cause of home fire was due to "electrical event" in kitchen

Posted: Updated:

The Colorado Springs Fire Department responded to reports of a structure fire where smoke was seen coming from the home on 4653 Gatewood Drive Tuesday.

CSFD said crews arrived within seven minutes and reported smoke showing from the front door. The fire was contained to the kitchen where smoke was visible four feet above the floor, but was extinguished quickly.

The home was unoccupied, but cleaning crews at the home heard a "popping" sound and saw smoke coming from the back of the stove so they called 911. Smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms were on and working when CSFD arrived.

Investigators determined the cause of the fire was accidental due to an "electrical event" in the kitchen, according to CSFD. No injuries were reported during the fire.

CSFD wants to remind citizens:

  • Always hire a qualified electrician to do all electrical work in the home
  • When you are buying or remodeling a home, have it inspected by a qualified private inspector or by local requirements
  • Follow this link from the National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) for more information surrounding electrical safety in the house:  https://www.nfpa.org/Public-Education/By-topic/Top-causes-of-fire/Electrical
