Bus shelter removed to stop homeless hangout

Posted: Updated:

There is a major change at a bus stop on Colorado Springs west side to discourage the homeless from hanging out there. The shelter cover is gone and a basic bus bench is now in its place.

"The business owners have expressed concerns about the having the shelter there,” said Old Colorado City Associates, Executive Director, Karen Cullen. There are reports of homeless groups under the cover, whole people waiting for a bus are outside. Business owners have taken pictures of people either sleeping or passed out in the covered area.

One of the business owners started making calls. It is a public area so anyone is allowed in the area. Managers of the bus system have dealt with problems at other covered bus stops. Based on previous success from removing covered stops, a decision was made for the same action for the stop at W. Colorado Avenue and 30th Street.  “ It really changes the situation on the bus stop and that bus stop again becomes a place for our riders to wait for the bus,” said Mountain Metro Transit Director, Craig Blewitt.

Business owners are saying the situation improved when the shelter was removed. "The removal of the shelter was an immediate impact to the changing of the behavior from the homeless," said Cullen

There is also an impact on bus riders. They now have to wait for the bus out in the elements.
