Salvation Army building to serve as temporary warming shelter for homeless

Posted: Updated:
PUEBLO -

New plans are in store to get a temporary warming shelter up and running in Pueblo for homeless people.

The Pueblo Rescue Mission told News 5 that plans are being finalized for The Salvation Army building on 13th Street to open its doors.

Pueblo Rescue Mission's Community Relations Manager Matthew Halsar says the organization wants to open the facility as soon as possible because of the colder weather.

Halsar says the goal is to open in January, but an exact date is still to be determined.

The Salvation Army building was always on the list of potential locations for a warming shelter. When plans at Hyde Park Community Center didn't work out the Pueblo Rescue Mission turned to The Salvation Army.

Halsar says there is no scheduled public meeting to discuss this latest plan. He says he is not sure how neighbors in the area will react, but is hopeful people will be supportive. The Salvation Army building has been used as a shelter in the past.

Halsar said, "We have continued to be optimistic. We've continued to be hopeful. We know that Pueblo is a good community that cares about this issue. We know that they'll come through. We know that something will happen."

He says the Pueblo Rescue Mission will be finishing the lease with The Salvation Army in the coming days. He is confident this plan will go through.
