Small dog freed from manhole ready to go home

Posted: Updated:

A happy reunion expected Thursday for the family of a dog who fell into a manhole and was hurt earlier this week.

Crews with the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region helped free 10-year-old Blizzard from the manhole at the request of the Colorado Springs Fire Department.

When Blizzard fell, he was pierced in the neck and leg with a pipe. The small dog needed help from a veterinarian to be safely removed. PPHSR said they sent a team of animal law enforcement officers and their staff veterinarian Dr. Rainey and the vet technician.

Dr. Rainey crawled into the manhole and spent 20 minutes comforting Blizzard, administering pain relief medication and carefully freeing him from the pipe. Once Blizzard was free, he was stabilized and given oxygen from fire crews.

Blizzard spent two nights recovering in an animal emergency room and is now ready to go home.
