Grass fires linked to homeless camps

This video is proof that camp fires can get out of control very fast.

Although it is often difficult to pinpoint the exact cause of a fire, Colorado Springs Fire Department says that nearly 90 fires have been linked to homeless camps this year in the Colorado Springs area.

Groups like the Colorado Springs Police Department Homeless Outreach Division work closely with the homeless population to teach them about fire safety. Even with the work they do, fires caused by homeless campfires are still a major issue. It's very easy for these fires to spread and they can cause major damage.

"They can get out of control. All it takes is somebody to leave the campfire unattended or if they fall asleep and don't wake up and it starts to catch, it gets outside of the designated area that they have it in," said Lt. Bryan Lynch of the CSFD.

Even if you're lighting fires in your fire pit, always make sure to have a garden hose handy, and always check for bans and ordinances before striking that match.
