Coroner identifies man killed in officer involved shooting

COLORADO SPRINGS -

A man who was shot and killed in an officer involved shooting in Colorado Springs has been identified.

The El Paso County Coroner's Office has identified him as 33-year old Christopher Louis Willard. According to CSPD, officers attempted to take Willard into custody on an outstanding theft warrant on Saturday, Dec 2.

Police said he actively resisted arrest, when officers began fighting with him. The suspect then brandished a handgun at officers resulting in him being shot.

Police said the suspect was pronounced dead after being transported to a local hospital. Officers revealed the handgun the suspect had was a realistic looking air-pistol. 

The Sheriff's Office retrieved body cam footage from the incident, which is being reviewed as part of the ongoing investigation.

The two officers involved in the shooting are on paid leave, per policy, pending the outcome of the investigation.

The Colorado Springs Police Department has identified the officers as:

  • Officer ChristopherFernandes has been employed by the Colorado Springs Police Department since April of 2014 and is currently assigned to the Gold Hill Division.
  • Officer Tracy Toth has been employed by the Colorado Springs Police Department since March of 2015 and is currently assigned to the Gold Hill Division.
