TIME magazine has named the "Silence Breakers" as it's 2017 person of the year.

The "Silence Breakers" refers to the individuals who set off a national whirlwind of both women and men coming forward with accusations of sexual misconduct, many against high profile individuals. The selection was revealed Wednesday morning on the TODAY show by the magazines editor-in-chief.

The cover features a photo of a diverse group of women, among them actress Ashley Judd and singer Taylor Swift. Swift, one of the earliest to share her story of abuse, recently won a lawsuit against Denver radio DJ David Mueller, whom she accused of groping her in 2013.

The "Silence Breakers" entered the national conversation amid the numerous sexual misconduct allegations against Hollywood executive Harvey Weinstein. As the number of allegations against Weinstein grew, so did the number of individuals who came out with their own stories and accusations of abuse. The social media #MeToo campaign also played a significant role in the number of cases of misconduct that were revealed by encouraging individuals to share their stories of abuse on social media.

Since 1927, TIME has given it's person of the year title to an individual or group who the magazine's editors believe have had the greatest influence on news and events from the past year. In 2016, the distinction was given to then president-elect Donald Trump.
