Sheriff's Office: Wanted man shot and killed by officers when he drew pistol

A man wanted for a misdemeanor warrant was shot and killed while Colorado Springs Police officers tried to take him into custody Saturday evening near downtown.

According to the El Paso County Sheriff's Office, which is handling the investigation, the as yet unidentified suspect resisted arrest and got into a fight with officers.

The man drew a pistol which led the officers to shoot, according to a release. The suspect was taken the the hospital where he died from his injuries. The officers involved sustained minor injuries. It is not clear how they were injured.

This all happened around 6 p.m. in the 1500 block of S. Nevada Avenue as the Festival of Lights parade was underway just up the road in downtown.

The identity of the suspect killed is being withheld until the notification of next of kin.

Per Colorado law, the El Paso County Sheriff's Office will conduct the investigation into the incident and hand over findings to the District Attorney for review.
