Colorado State Patrol and 120 other law enforcement agencies arrested more than 600 drivers during their 10 day crackdown on drunk or drugged driving.

As part of their "The Heat Is On" campaign, police agencies statewide increased their efforts to deter drunk driving for ten days leading up to the Thanksgiving holiday.

From Nov. 17 to Nov. 27, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) reported 613 drivers were arrested, an increase from 522 during the same time last year.  The Colorado Springs Police Department reported 56 arrests during this period, the most of any police department in the state.

“Impaired drivers account for roughly one-third of all traffic fatalities in Colorado and DUI-prevention efforts are an effective tool to reduce such crashes” said Darrell Lingk, Director of the Office of Transportation Safety at CDOT.

Another increased DUI enforcement period starts Friday and run through Dec. 11.
