New visitor center proposal at Air Force Academy

Posted: Updated:

El Paso County Commissioners got a look on Thursday at what the new Air Force Academy visitors center could look like.

The group Blue and Silver Development Partners showed their proposal to commissioners today. They requested a comment letter from board members to include with their bid to win a long term lease from the Air Force to build the updated attraction.

The design calls for a new hotel, restaurants and retail shops. The entire center will be located outside of the north security gate.

"Since 2001 after the event that happened at the World Trade Center, visitorship at the Air Force Academy Visitor Center has decreased significantly, predominantly because of security requirements," said developer Dan Schnepf.

The City for Champions project in Colorado Springs includes $13 million dollar tax incentive for a new visitor center.
