Fire breaks out in Pueblo homeless camp

Posted: Updated:

Fire crews responded to flames, near the 13th Street Bridge in Pueblo, Wednesday night.

They say it happened around 9:45 p.m., after a bonfire in homeless camp--near the river--got out of control.

News5 spoke with the homeless man who started the fire.  He says he was trying to cook food, when a skunk wandered into the camp.

He tried to run away so he wouldn't get sprayed, and says one of the trees caught fire during that time.

Firefighters were still working the scene when News5 arrived around 10:30 p.m., but the flames had been put out.

The man living in the homeless camp says all of his possessions--including his wallet--were destroyed.

He says he was not seriously injured.
