Colorado Springs PD investigating death on East Willamette

Posted: Updated:

Detectives with the Colorado Springs Police Department are investigating the death of a man at a home in the Knob Hill neighborhood as a homicide. Officers arrived at the rental property on the 2400 block of East Willamette around 12:23 p.m. for a welfare check.

When they entered the home, they found the man's body which appeared to have suffered serious trauma. Police couldn't release more specific details about how the man may have died.

Investigators have not yet identified any suspects.  Public information officer Lt. Howard Black told reporters that everyone who may have been involved with the death was accounted for and that officers were not actively searching for any additional suspects.

Neighbors told News 5 that they saw the police take away a man in handcuffs.

"We drove down the street and had seen some cops at the house and we'd seen them handcuffing some guy," said Cheri Wells who was visiting relatives in the neighborhood. "The tape is up now but there was no tape up at the time and only like two or three cops at the time."

Megan Nevin lives across the street and also saw the man in handcuffs.  Investigators told her about the officers finding a body was found during the welfare check.

"My motto has always been to be aware but not afraid," Nevin said.

Wells was more troubled by what happened.

"It's scary," she said. "Stuff is happening all over the place, it's scary to walk our your door anymore."

The El Paso County Coroners office has responded to the crime scene. If the medical examiner formally determines the death was a homicide, it would be the 28th case of the year in Colorado Springs.
