Local program provides gifts to seniors in need of holiday spirit

Posted: Updated:

Shopping is underway for seniors in need of some holiday spirit across Southern Colorado.

This is a part of the 'Be A Santa To A Senior' program, that provides gifts to senior citizens for the holidays.

Those who participate can pick a bulb off a tree provided by "Home Instead" and fulfill a seniors wish.

The program helps seniors who wouldn't normally receive gifts for the holidays, or may have sadly been forgotten.

"One of the communities called me and said that she had 20 women in their memory care and all 20 gifts are going to go to those 20 women. often times in memory care families drop them off then they don't really have any outside contact, so that was really special to me," said Jerri Schomaker of Home Instead Senior Care.

For those interested in playing Santa to spoil a senior citizen, head to the Home Instead Senior Care Center on Union Blvd.

This year "Home Instead" hopes to brighten the spirits of at least 400 seniors this holiday season.
