A pursuit in Las Cruces, N.M. involving two Colorado Springs residents lead to the death of a motorcyclist.

According to the New Mexico State Patrol, dispatch received a call of a vehicle pursuit following a carjacking that happened on Interstate 10 in Las Cruces.

Reports said around 2:00 p.m. a tan pickup truck entered the Border Patrol checkpoint on Interstate 10 west of Las Cruces. Border Patrol agents say they discovered the truck was stolen out of Colorado.

Border Patrol asked the male driver for identification when he told agents he didn't have any, the female passenger did provide a drivers license that patrol says was stolen. The man was then asked to pull over in the secondary lane.

Reports said the male and female then fled in the truck which lead Border Patrol agents on a pursuit. The Border Patrol agents say they saw the suspects carjack a vehicle at gunpoint on Interstate 10. They described the vehicle as a grey Toyota 4-Runner with a Texas license plate.

The suspects then reportedly fled the scene in the stolen Toyota eastbound on Interstate 10 towards Las Cruces. Border Patrol agents then pursued the vehicle, but were unable to see them after they excited at Motel Boulevard.

The victims of the carjacking were interviewed by New Mexico State Patrol, when they told patrol officers they saw a tan pickup truck cross over the eastbound lanes on Interstate 10 nearly hitting a tractor trailer.

State patrol said the victim in the trailer stopped to avoid collision when the male and female suspects approached his car with a gun, and ordered him to get out of the car. He then got out with his children, ages seven and two, along with his wife.

Las Cruces Police were able to locate the vehicle in Las Cruces, where reports say the suspects lead officers on a pursuit throughout the city. The pursuit then continued onto both Interstates 10 and 25, reaching reported speeds of up to 110 miles per hour. Reports said the suspect turned west after entering I-25, and drove through a barbed wire fence onto Las Alturas Drive where he struck a motorcyclist.

Police said the motorcyclist was transported to Mountain View Hospital and later died from injuries. He was identified as J.R. Stewart of Las Cruces.

Police identified the suspects as 34-year old Daniel Allen Lowell and 32-year old Trista Marie Schlaefli, both out of Colorado Springs. Police say Lowell is being charged with 18 total crimes including homicide by vehicle, child abuse, robbery and more. He also had a number of separate arrest warrants discovered at the time of his arrest, including attempted murder, burglary, felony evading and identity theft.

Schlaefli was reportedly charged with 10 total crimes including homicide by vehicle, armed robbery, concealing identity and more. Both suspects will be booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center.
