CBI sets record for firearm background checks on Black Friday

Posted: Updated:

The Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) InstaCheck Unit recorded its biggest Black Friday numbers in history.

The CBI InstaCheck team conducted a total of 4,779 background checks for firearm transfers between 12:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 24. The largest numbers in the history of the unit.

Here is a chart of the previous year's totals.

According to CBI, all 41 InstaCheck employees worked a minimum of 10-hour shifts to conduct background checks for firearms transfers on Friday. The unit operating hours expanded its hours from 12 hours to 21 hours on the shopping holiday.

The unit's traditional hours are from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily, with the exception of Thanksgiving and Christmas Day.

“Because the Black Friday shopping event tends to be the heaviest volume day for the CBI InstaCheck Unit, the team worked to configure staffing and expand hours of operation to meet the demand ,” said CBI Director Ted Mink. “CBI InstaCheck is dedicated to providing the timeliest, most accurate, efficient and professional customer service possible for these critical public safety checks.”

CBI InstaCheck is the point of contact for the FBI National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NCIS) program for the State of Colorado.
